  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions by peeling and slicing them into bite-sized petals.
  2. Set up your coating station with three bowls: one for the flour mixture (flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt), one for buttermilk, and another for panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat each onion piece in the flour mixture, then dip it in buttermilk, followed by the panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the coated onion petals in batches until golden brown and crispy (about 2-3 minutes), then drain on paper towels.
  6. For the dipping sauce, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, horseradish (if using), smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
